Why the Small Stuff Adds Up
A walk-in unit is designed to hold a temperature, not fight a constant leak of warm air. Every gap around a door, every dirty coil, and every defrost cycle that runs longer than it needs to forces the compressor to work harder and longer to catch back up. None of that shows up as one dramatic failure — it shows up gradually, as higher bills and a unit that seems to run more than it used to.
Door Gaskets: The First Place Cold Air Leaks Out
Gaskets are the rubber seal around the cooler door, and they take abuse from carts, boxes, and daily traffic. Once a gasket cracks, flattens, or pulls away from the door frame, cold air escapes and warm, moist air pulls in — which also adds to frost buildup inside the unit.

- Keep the area around the condenser clear so airflow isn't blocked by boxes, mats, or debris.
- Have coils professionally cleaned rather than blasting them with a hose or compressed air yourself — bent fins reduce airflow and are easy to create by accident.
Defrost Cycles: Tuned, Not Guessed
Defrost keeps ice from building up on the evaporator coil, but a defrost schedule that's set wrong — running too often, too long, or at the wrong times — wastes energy and can push the box temperature up more than owners realize. This is a setting a technician calibrates based on your specific unit, product load, and door traffic, not something to adjust by trial and error.
Door Discipline: The Free Fix
No equipment upgrade beats simply keeping the door closed. Prop-open habits during busy prep or delivery windows are one of the most common — and most avoidable — sources of energy waste in a walk-in.
- Train staff to load and unload with a plan so the door isn't held open longer than necessary.
- Fix or replace any door closer that isn't pulling the door shut on its own.

Refrigerant charge, compressor performance, electrical connections, and defrost control settings are safety-critical and regulated work.
